​I didn’t start out as “the cloud guy.”

Back in college and university, we were trained to do accounting the traditional way: desktop software, endless manual processes, and enough paper to wipe out a small forest. Even then, I thought, there’s got to be a better way.

After graduating, I spent a year in the corporate world working in accounts receivable and trust account management, then moved into a leadership role in the non-profit sector, running the full accounting cycle. I valued the experience, but much of the work felt repetitive. Important, yes, but time-consuming in ways that technology could easily improve.

That’s when a colleague introduced me to cloud accounting. It wasn’t part of the curriculum when I was in school, but it completely shifted how I saw the industry. With automation, AI, and cloud-based tools, we could replace paper-heavy, manual tasks with streamlined workflows, instant reporting, and better organization for both accounting teams and the businesses they support.

I tested it in the non-profit, automating workflows and moving toward paperless systems. That’s when the lightbulb went off for me: this was the future of accounting.
